A UC Berkeley Working Group for
19th and 20th Century German History
Der Kreis aims to bring together an interdisciplinary community of scholars interested in German history of the 19th and 20th centuries. The group intends to provide a forum for both students and faculty to engage with trends in current historiography as well as to present their own research. The group is open to discussions on all historical methodologies. Thematically, the group’s current schedule includes transnational and global narratives; reevaluations of traditional dates of rupture; scholarship that integrates histories of East and West Germany; and attempts to integrate the history of Germany into the history of contemporary Europe and the European Union.
UC Berkeley—currently the top institution in the nation for the study of European history—has a long tradition of strong scholarship in German history and German studies. Der Kreis intends to help support this tradition.
